Project of Choice 2024 – Tasha Webb

At the close of 2024, all Wilson Architects team members took a moment to reflect on their favourite property project of the year.

One of Tasha’s favourite property projects of 2024 was an extension and renovation based in Nottinghamshire. The client was looking to extend their home to supplement a two-storey side extension, a single-storey rear extension, and a large front garage build.

Collaborating with Eamonn Chapman, who came up with the initial plan, it was a project Tasha thoroughly enjoyed.  She said, “There was quite a lot of creative freedom. Mood boards were set up to thoughtfully consider the space. One of the highlights were the funky, slatted walls designed that would serve as a corridor, opening up the space, and allowing residents to see through into other rooms.”

Initially, when entering the homes hallway, there was no corridor leading through to the rear of the home that housed the kitchen and living room. Just doors.

“You would have to go directly into the dining room to access the open plan kitchen / living room, making it feel quite closed off”. Tasha explained.

Precedents of the wooden-slatted wall design

It felt impractical and invasive to go through another room just to get to the kitchen. To open up the space, wooden slatted walls were implemented to serve half-way as a privacy corridor.

The spacious entrance hallway now has a half corridor that leads through the dining room to the open plan kitchen.

“The slates helped create a sense of privacy – not quite corridor, not quite full open room, which opened up the space”. Tasha said. The new layout enables a natural flow throughout the entrance hallway, dining room and into the living room, without it feeling like you’re barging through rooms.

Once in the open plan kitchen and living room, the gorgeous skylight above is another stand-out feature that further opens the tranquil space. Tasha drew up the floor plans, elevations and the section to design a domestic expansion on the back. “Another highlight was the layout of the massive open-plan kitchen and living room area, which was quite cool.”

With a valuation just short of 600k, the project emphasised the importance of including elements the owner loves into the design, such as an indoor-golf range, and stunning skylights which provide a clear, tranquil area to relax in.
